Stratovarius est un groupe de power metal finlandais formé à Helsinki en 1984 par Tuomo Lassila (batterie), Staffan Stråhlman (guitare) et John Vihervä (basse). La formation qui a connu le succès international comprenait Timo Tolkki à la guitare, Timo Kotipelto au chant, Jens Johansson aux claviers, Jari Kainulainen à la basse et Jörg Michael à la batterie. Tolkki est l'auteur principal des musiques et des paroles. Leur son se caractérise par des mélodies épiques, des riffs de guitare virtuoses et une utilisation savante du clavier. Les morceaux les plus représentatifs sont *Black Diamond*, *Forever*, *Hunting High and Low*. Les albums *Visions* (1997) et *Destiny* (2005) sont considérés comme parmi leurs œuvres les plus importantes.
