Varathron est un groupe de black metal grec formé à Athènes en 1988 par Stefanos Karasavvas, qui utilise le pseudonyme Stefan Necroabyssious. Considérés comme des pionniers de la scène black metal grecque aux côtés de groupes comme Rotting Christ et Necromantia, Varathron possède un son caractérisé par des atmosphères sombres et des rythmes rapides. Leur premier concert a eu lieu en 1990, partageant la scène avec Rotting Christ. Leur album de début, intitulé "His Majesty at the Swamp", est sorti en 1993 sur le label Cyber Music. Parmi leurs chansons les plus représentatives figurent "The Serpent's Embrace", "Blood of the Gods" et "Darkest Hour".
