Après avoir passé son enfance à Gadsden, il s'est installé à Atlanta pour se consacrer à la musique. En 2005, il a signé avec Shady Records d'Eminem, devenant l'un de ses artistes les plus importants. Yelawolf est connu pour son style de rap agressif et ses rimes complexes, souvent centrées sur des thèmes autobiographiques tels que son enfance difficile et sa lutte contre la dépendance.
