Bathory était un groupe suédois de heavy metal formé en 1983 par Quorthon (pseudonyme de Lars-Göran Petrov). Considérés comme des pionniers du black metal et du Viking metal, ils ont profondément influencé le paysage musical underground. Le nom du groupe est tiré de la célèbre comtesse hongroise Elizabeth Bathory, connue pour ses pratiques sanguinaires et la légende qui l'entoure. Bathory a publié une série d'albums fondamentaux, dont "Blood Fire Death" (1987), considéré comme un jalon du black metal, et "Hammerheart" (1990), qui introduit des éléments folk et viking. D'autres albums importants sont "Twilight of the Gods" (1996) et "Requiem" (2001). Parmi leurs chansons les plus représentatives figurent "Total Destruction", "In League with Satan", "The Lake", "Equimanthorn" et "Outro Aeternum". Quorthon, seul membre stable du groupe, a géré tous les aspects musicaux et de production jusqu'à sa mort en 2004.
