Franz Nicolay est un musicien et écrivain américain, surtout connu comme claviériste et chanteur de soutien du groupe de rock The Hold Steady. Né en 1975, Nicolay a commencé sa carrière musicale dans les années 1990 en jouant dans plusieurs groupes indépendants à New York City. En 2004, il s'est joint aux Hold Steady, avec qui il a sorti neuf albums studio à ce jour. La musique des Hold Steady se caractérise par des paroles narratives et des mélodies rock énergiques, souvent inspirées de la vie quotidienne et des expériences de la classe ouvrière américaine. Outre son travail avec les Hold Steady, Nicolay a également collaboré avec d'autres artistes comme The National et The Decemberists, et il est un auteur prolifique d'essais et de critiques musicales.
