Franz Nicolay è un musicista e scrittore statunitense, noto soprattutto per essere il tastierista e cantante di supporto del gruppo rock The Hold Steady. Nato nel 1975, Nicolay ha iniziato la sua carriera musicale negli anni '90 suonando in diverse band indipendenti a New York City. Nel 2004 si è unito ai The Hold Steady, con cui ha pubblicato nove album di studio fino ad oggi. La musica dei The Hold Steady è caratterizzata da testi narrativi e melodie rock energiche, spesso ispirati alla vita quotidiana e alle esperienze della classe operaia americana. Oltre al suo lavoro con i The Hold Steady, Nicolay ha anche collaborato con altri artisti come The National e The Decemberists, ed è un autore prolifico di saggi e recensioni musicali. Tra le canzoni più rappresentative dei The Hold Steady figurano "The Weekenders", "Chips Ahoy" e "Your Little Hoodrat Friend".
